AVID is a program for students in the academic “middle” (GPA 2.0 to 3.5) who are underachieving, underrepresented, and/or first-generation college students.  The purpose of AVID is to prepare students for college.  The AVID elective class provides academic support to students.  Writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization & reading (WICOR), along with tutorials and study skills are the core strategies of the AVID program.  

Requirements for receiving graduation cords:

•   Student has a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher.

• Student accepted to an accredited college or university, trade school or military

• Student must have been in the AVID Program a minimum of two years with the final year being their senior year.  

Requirement for receiving AVID Graduation Stole:

• Student must have a GPA of 2.0 or higher 

• Student has been accepted to an accredited college or university, trade school or military

• Student has been in the AVID Program all four years of high school.

Bernalillo Bands are made up of grades 7-12 from both Bernalillo Middle and Bernalillo High School.  The Bands annually attend the New Mexico Music Educators Association District VI Band Music Performance Assessment, also known as Band Large Group, and have earned Superior ratings for the past 5 years in a row.  The Bernalillo Bands have also qualified and attended the NMAA State Concert Band Competition for the last two years, and earned our schools first “Superior” ratings at that competition placing 5th in our class at an event with over 100 other bands from all over New Mexico.

The BHS Publications, also known as EPIC Productions, is a student-run staff dedicated to the production of school publications such as the school yearbook. Students earn a chord for participating in 2 or more terms as a contributing staff member, 1 full credit must be earned in their senior year and the student must have produced both visual and written content for the publication.

To be eligible to receive the Bernalillo FFA cord, a member must meet the following minimum qualifications:

1. Must be an active member for two years and be active their senior year in high school or serve as an officer their senior year of high school.

2. Students must attend a total of three parent/student meetings every school year and be involved in all FFA business.

3. Students must pay all state and national fees (part of their class fees) at the beginning of the school year for all years they have participated in FFA.

4. Students must behave and represent themselves and the school in a way that supports the ideals of the National FFA Organization.

Gender-Sexuality Alliances (GSA) also known as “Spartan H.E.R.O.” (Helping Educate Regarding Orientation) is a student-led club with a faculty advisor that works to promote respect for all students. The GSA participates in national activities such as 'The Day of Silence' and 'World AIDS Day' to raise awareness, educates students and staff, and promotes respect and understanding for everyone in the BHS community.

The International Thespian Honor Society is a group that is dedicated not only to excellent work within the realm of theatre and film, but also gets involved with community, academic, and extra curricular activities. Students involved work toward different honors and awards by obtaining Thespian points through participation in shows, competitions, festivals and conferences. All students are welcome to participate in every aspect of theater including technical theatre.

Requirements for receiving graduation cords:

• An initiated Thespian must be in good standing by the time of graduation.

• For a Blue stole student has to earn 60Pts.

• For a White stole student has to earn 120 Pts.

• For a medal student has to earn 180 Pts.

The New Mexico Mathematics, Engineering, and Science Achievement (NM MESA) is a pre-college program that prepares students for college and careers in mathematics, engineering, science or technically related fields.

Bernalillo MESA supports students in a variety of enriched math, science and engineering activities including field trips, workshops, regional and state-wide academic competitions, community service and leadership development projects.

The National Honor Society (NHS) elevates a school’s commitment to the values of scholarship, service, leadership, and character. These four pillars have been associated with membership in the organization since its inception in 1921.

Membership in the National Honor Society is awarded to those who work hard and exhibit good examples of the four pillars Character, Scholarship, Leadership and Service. They must strive to uphold the 4 pillars and maintain a 3.75 and above GPA each semester.

The BHS Outdoor Club emphasizes environmental education and peer understand and cooperation by exposing students to experiences in nature through hiking, backpacking, cross-country skiing, snow-showing, camping, and other outdoor activities.  The club expects students to accept one another, be responsible, contribute, and cooperate in a group effort through fundraising, trip preparation, and collaboration in the development of club guideline and safety procedures.  For camping trips, mixed groups work together to set up camp collect and chop firewood, cook, clean-up, break camp and participate in group treks and/or activities.  When introducing members to new activities, participants are required to teach and patiently encourage one another. The goal is to respect and appreciate nature and each other.

The Bernalillo High School, Student Council, also known as “Spartan Empire”, is an organization formed to promote and encourage a voice and reflect the views of the Student Body of Bernalillo High School.

To Earn a graduation Cord students must participate in BHS’ Student Council for a minimum of 2 trimesters during their senior year, participate in at least 70% of all school sponsored activities and attend at least one NMASC Conference.
